A regional art outing does not have to mean a major trip. The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, gives Kansas City residents another place to encounter recent art and artists beyond the familiar central-city circuit.
Admission is free. The museum offers online resources for self-guided visits and recommends arranging a guided tour for groups of five or more. Folding campstools, pencils and clipboards may be requested, making it possible to spend more time studying a work rather than continually moving through the galleries.
The published schedule is Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; and Sunday noon–5 p.m. Mondays and college holidays are closed. Check current exhibitions and campus parking information before traveling to 12345 College Boulevard.
Bring a pencil if you want to make notes; pens and markers are not allowed in galleries. Photography is limited to permanent-collection works, without flash, and loaned works cannot be photographed. Instead of trying to document everything, compare two objects through a single question about scale, texture or space. Let the museum's interpretation add context after an initial look.
